Requalification - 2 days

This course is essential for first aiders in the workplace and complies with the current Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. All employers in the UK have a legal duty to provide first aid cover for their employees. Self-employed persons must also ensure they have adequate facilities to provide first aid to themselves while at work. Ofqual approved certificates will be issued to delegates who successfully complete the course. Certificates are valid for 3 years however, it is recommended by the HSE that a yearly Skills Update (minimum 3 hours) is undertaken to reduce the skills fade of the First Aider. The 3-day course includes the following subjects: • The role of the first aider, including first aid kits, incident reports and preventing cross infection • Control of bleeding • Burns and scalds • Sprains and strains • Fractures and dislocations, including neck and spinal injuries • Seizures • Shock • Asthma • Choking • Anaphylaxis • Diabetes • Head injuries, including Stroke • Eye injuries • Poisoning • Angina and heart attack • Treatment of the unconscious casualty • Resuscitation • Use of the AED The 2-day requalification course will aim to update the skills and knowledge of the first aider; covering all of those subjects included in the 3-day course. The first aider still has up to 28 days (course must be completed on, or before, the 28th day) after the expiry date of their certificate to requalify on the 2-day course. However, during this time they will no longer be considered as being a qualified first aider. Courses are assessed by written assessment (multi-choice questions) and ongoing assessment, by the trainer of practical skills.

Paediatric First Aid - 12 hours
Level 3 - (RQF) Certification or First Aid Associates Certification

This course is ideal for those delegates who look after younger children in a primary school, nursery, childminding setting, playgroup, etc, which satisfies OFSTED Standards. The Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage states that "at least one person who has a current paediatric first aid certificate must be on the premises and available at all times when children are present, and must accompany children on outings." It also states that "providers can choose which organisation they wish to provide the training (preferably one with a nationally approved and accredited first aid qualification or one that is a member of a trade body with an approval and monitoring scheme) but the training must cover the course content as for St John Ambulance or Red Cross paediatric first aid training and be renewed every three years." Therefore the course can be run either as a Level 3 RQF course, in which case there will be a formal assessment by use of multi-choice questions and on-going observed assessment, or as a First Aid Associates course, in which case the assessment is through on-going observed assessment of practical skills. This difference will be reflected in the cost of the course. Certificates in either case are valid for 3 years. This qualification can also be used to provide evidence for those who are working towards a qualification in Child Care and Education or as an additional qualification to the 3 day First Aid at Work certificate, as baby and child are not usually covered during that course. The course covers the following subjects: • Incident management; including first aid kits and incident reports • Control of bleeding • Burns and scalds • Effects of extreme heat and cold • Shock • Seizures: febrile, absence and epileptic • Asthma • Diabetic emergencies • Head, neck and spinal injuries • Sprains, strains, fractures and dislocations • Objects in the eyes, ears and nose • Poisons, bites and stings • Anaphylaxis • Sudden serious illnesses: including sickle cell anaemia, croup, epiglottis, mumps, measles and meningitis. • Choking: baby, child and adult • Treatment of the unconscious casualty; baby, child and adult • Resuscitation: baby, child and adult • Use of the AED Assessment of the course is by observed assessment of practical skills, by the trainer for the First Aid Associates course, but also by means of the multi-choice question paper (as well as observed assessment of practical skills by the trainer) for the RQF course.
